Adelaide University Karate - Seishikan is one of two schools operated by Adelaide University Karate Club (the other school being Adelaide Univesity Karate - IKGA).
Both schools teach traditional Gojuryu Karate but with different affiliations. Our school is affiliated with Seishikan and All Japan Karate Federation Gojukai, whereas the IKGA school is affiliated with International Karate Gojukai Association (IKGA).
Members are entitled to attend the classes of both schools, which together span every day of the week.
We train in a traditional style of Karate known as Gojuryu.
Gojuryu was developed by Chojun Miyagi Sensei in Okinawa, Japan and is characterised by:
hard / soft power variation
close range combat
a combination of linear and circular techniques
emphasis on breathing techniques (including abdominal breathing)
Adelaide University Karate Club was formed in 1974 when Masao Tada Hanshi (8th Dan, JKF Gojukai) returned to Japan and entrusted Chooi Renshi (5th Dan, JKF Gojukai) to continue teaching traditional Gojuryu Karate in Adelaide.
Chooi Renshi was chief instructor for almost 40 years before his passing in 2012. During that time, he forged the Seishikan school's strong reputation and ties with senior instructors from around the world.
In 2026, the Club merged with the UniSA Karate Club which also taught traditional Gojuryu Karate but under the auspices of the International Karate Gojukai Association (IKGA).
Today, the Club operates two schools: Adelaide University Karate - Seishikan (our school) and Adelaide University Karate - IKGA (the former UniSA Karate Club).
Our school is headed by Chooi Renshi’s senior student, Peter Davie Renshi (7th Dan, Seishikan). Peter Renshi is assisted by a cohort of senior instructors, who regularly train with the general class.
Our school is affiliated with the following organisations:
Adelaide University Sport and Fitness
Australian Karate Federation
All Japan Karate Federation Gojukai
Seishikan
